Behind The First Product

Healthy skin starts with clean skin - so it felt only natural that a soap would be the very first product in the S E A Skin Co collection.

When I started this journey, I knew very little about soap-making. But I knew exactly what I wanted from a bar soap.

Soap is something we use multiple times a day, every single day, all year long. Because of that, I wanted to create something truly intentional: a product made with only the most skin-friendly ingredients, designed to nourish while it cleanses, and crafted with as little environmental impact as possible.

It had to be gentle, yet effective. Nourishing, yet cleansing. Free from bioaccumulative ingredients. And most importantly - it had to be plastic-free!

Switching to bar soap eliminates plastic bottles completely. A small change, with a meaningful impact.

Learning The Art Of Soap Making

Soap-making is both a science and an art - one that has been practiced for thousands of years.

At its core, soap is created through a process called saponification, where oils and butters react with lye (sodium hydroxide) and water. While lye is essential to this transformation, none of it remains in the final product. After a careful curing process - ours lasts 4 to 6 weeks - the result is a gentle, nourishing bar made entirely of skin-loving ingredients.

From the beginning, I worked with my favorite oils and butters to create something very specific: a soap that could cleanse the entire body, yet be gentle enough for even the most sensitive face. I also wanted a bar that felt substantial - hard and long-lasting - with a soft, creamy, luxurious lather.

What I didn’t expect was just how complex soap-making truly is. Each oil and butter brings its own fatty acid profile, affecting everything from lather and hardness to conditioning and longevity. I found myself studying each ingredient in depth, carefully balancing formulas to achieve the perfect result.

There were moments I wondered if it would be easier to outsource production altogether. But the perfectionist in me couldn’t let go.

So I kept going - learning, testing, and refining - one small batch at a time.

Crafting Soap In Hawaii

Making soap on the North Shore of Oʻahu comes with its own unique challenges.

I’m deeply intentional about my ingredients. Even in a product that washes off the skin, I only use high-quality, organic oils and butters. Sourcing these ingredients from around the world to Hawaiʻi is both time-consuming and expensive - but to me, it’s worth it.

Humidity is another challenge. Soap requires a long curing time, and moisture in the air can affect the final product. Each batch cures for 4 to 6 weeks in a carefully controlled environment, with a dehumidifier running continuously. Thankfully, we’re powered by solar!

A Different Approach To Fragrance

If I were making soap only for myself, I would be perfectly happy with an unscented bar - the natural aroma of organic oils and butters is subtle and beautiful.

But cleansing is more than just functional - it’s a ritual. And scent plays a powerful role in that experience.

Many “natural” soaps use synthetic fragrance oils to create long-lasting scents. I chose a different path.

My soaps contain no synthetic fragrance—ever! Not even “safe synthetics.”

Instead, I use only organic and wildcrafted essential oils - each selected not just for scent, but for its benefit to the skin, the senses, and emotional well-being.

This is what I call Functional Fragrance - and I’ll be sharing more about this philosophy in another blog post.

A Small Batch Square Of Luxury

After months of formulating, testing, adjusting, and waiting, I finally created the soap I had envisioned from the beginning.

The final bars are:

  • Gentle yet effective
  • Nourishing and balancing
  • Firm enough to withstand Hawaiʻi’s humidity
  • Rich in a soft, creamy, luxurious lather
  • Subtly scented

I tested these soaps on my own very sensitive skin for months - and I can confidently say: my skin approved.

They even remove makeup and mineral sunscreen with ease.

Plastic-Free By Design

One of my biggest motivations for creating a bar soap was to reduce plastic waste.

Soap is one of the most frequently used products in our daily lives - yet it often comes packaged in plastic bottles that quickly end up as waste.

S E A Skin Co soaps are packaged simply and consciously:

  • A kraft paper box
  • A fully paper-based label

No plastic. No excess.

Simple, Honest & Intentional

These are not brightly colored, heavily fragranced, decorative soaps. They are something else entirely.

A simple, rustic, luxurious bar - made with the absolute best ingredients for your skin.

When you hold one, know that it was created with intention: to nourish your skin, support your daily ritual, and tread lightly on the earth.

Caring For Your Soap Bar

To extend the life of your soap, keep it dry between uses. Use a well-draining soap dish or a hanging soap bag, and avoid letting it sit in water. With proper care, your bar will last beautifully.
